Creating a Financial Plan isn’t just for people who have lots of money or complicated lives. It’s for anyone who wants to feel more in control of their money and their life. Click here for one woman's transformational story.

If you are tired of feeling financially vulnerable and want to be more proactive and self-sufficient in your personal and financial life, this program is for you!

What exactly is a financial plan and how will it help me?

A financial plan is a roadmap to help you define your financial life goals and to give you the tools and structure you need to organize your finances to live the life you want.

Creating a Financial Plan is a process to help you manage all aspects of your personal finances more successfully. It considers all of your financial needs including: budgeting and savings, debt management, tax planning, investments, insurance, retirement and estate planning.

A financial plan will help you:
  • reduce stress
  • develop a stronger, more empowered relationship with your financial advisors
  • improve your relationship with your spouse and family
  • achieve your goals
  • feel more powerful and self-sufficient

Through the process of creating a financial plan, you will learn more about yourself – what motivates you, what stops you from taking control of your money – and how best to structure your finances in a way that suits your individual psychology, needs and circumstances. You will also learn the language of money and what you steps you need to take so you can rest easy that you have taken care of all aspects of your personal finances.

Who exactly is this program for?

You are a professional woman, an entrepreneur or stay at home mom who wants to feel more confident and secure knowing that you will have the money you need to retire comfortably, to enjoy your work and family without feeling financial pressures and to have money left over for you. Specifically,

  • You may be experiencing or contemplating a life transition like a career change, marriage, having children, or retirement and you aren’t sure what the impact will be on your finances. With so much uncertainty, you may be finding it hard to make decisions and it might feel like money (or the lack of it) is throwing cold water on your plans.
  • Or, you may never have taken an active role in managing your (or your family’s) finances, but realize that it’s time to get more involved with your money either through desire to take charge or because of a life change such as divorce or death of a spouse.
  • You may be tired of feeling stressed about money and are ready to take charge but you aren’t sure where to start, where to turn or who to trust.

If any of these are true for you, this program may be what you’re looking for.

How does the Smart Money Essentials (formerly Build Your Own Financial Plan) program work?

The program is highly interactive and hands-on and is designed to not only help you learn the basics of financial planning, but to give you the skills, tools, tips and techniques to take immediate action with your money.

Teleclasses run every 2nd week over 3 months and are facilitated by Karin & Sheila, experienced financial planners and educators. You will also get a 140 page learning guide that distills all of the most important financial concepts in concise, practical, easy to understand language. It also includes stories, resources, and a CD with all the worksheets you need to build your financial plan.

You also get a free downloadable audio recording of all the teleclasses. You can then listen in at your convenience in case you miss a class or if you simply want to review any of the classes later.

We know how busy you are so we’ve designed the program to break up complex topics into manageable pieces so you can integrate the information slowly and consistently. That’s why the teleclasses are every 2 weeks so you have time in between the classes to read and integrate the new material, work on the worksheets and be prepared with your questions for the following class.

This way you don’t just get a bunch of information and worksheets that end up sitting on your desk, you get the structure and accountability to help make sure you get organized with your money - once and for all.

Each class follows a similar format – We review the key financial planning concepts that you need to know and the “homework” relating to the session. We also facilitate interactive discussion and Q&A, and then go over what you need to do for the next session.

The Learning Guide for the course
does a great job breaking down a scary subject into manageable pieces. It’s written in very accessible language and the tone was perfect - folksy, friendly, encouraging. The quotations and examples were great as they helped to emphasize certain points. I especially appreciated that you and Karin included your own stories too as it personalized the whole thing.
